Thermographic and Histological Evaluation of Laser Skin Resurfacing Scans

چکیده
In general, ablative laser skin resurfacing procedures have shown good short-term efficacy. However, the mechanisms underlying laser skin resurfacing remain poorly understood. We performed a quantitative study to investigate the thermal response of skin to CO2 laser irradiation. Raster scans were performed on an in vivo rat model and radiometric surface temperatures measured using a thermal camera. Temperatures approaching 400 C were measured during the scans and remained above the initial skin temperature for durations longer than ten seconds. Analysis of histology sections showed that the epidermis remained partially intact after three passes. To explain the observed trends in the temperature response and histology, the dynamics of optical and thermal parameters were investigated. Water vaporization played a key role in governing the response of the skin to subsequent laser passes. Char formation and pulse stacking altered the thermal effects.

OBJECTIVE To clarify in vivo healing of eyelid skin after carbon dioxide (CO2) laser resurfacing. DESIGN Patients requesting upper eyelid blepharoplasty consented to undergo previous CO2 laser skin resurfacing of the upper eyelid skin segments to be excised at various time intervals. After blepharoplasty, the skin specimens were analyzed histopathologically by 2 masked pathologists. PATIENT...
متن کاملClinical and Histological Evaluation of Er:YAG Ablative Fractional Skin Resurfacing
Ablative fractional skin resurfacing represents a new possibility that allows for shorter downtime and minimizes the risk of possible side effects compared to classical full ablative Er:YAG and CO2 treatment. To evaluate the potential benefits of fractional treatment with Er:YAG for skin resurfacing, we performed a clinical and histological comparison of the healing process after fractional and...

متن کاملEffect of pretreatment on the incidence of hyperpigmentation following cutaneous CO2 laser resurfacing.
BACKGROUND Transient hyperpigmentation is the most common complication seen following cutaneous carbon dioxide (CO2) laser resurfacing. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of a topical skin lightening regimen prior to cutaneous laser resurfacing reduces the incidence of post-laser resurfacing hyperpigmentation. METHODS One hundred consecutive CO2 laser resur...
